Literacy, Curriculum, and Pedagogies: Considerations for Anthropologists Teaching First-Year Composition

Despite the fact that this article began as a formal response to Chattaraj (2020), it serves larger purpose in contextualizing first-year composition classroom and training required provide effective instruction students across all academic fields. Although an anthropologically-minded approach teaching of writing can be quite beneficial, suggesting anthropologist can—or even should—assume responsibilities without additional is ill-advised. To end, draws upon not only prior literature on Composition/Rhetoric, but also place benefits anthropology more generally. Because initial publication (i.e. Chattaraj, 2020) relied strictly personal anecdotal evidence for success particular setting at liberal arts university, findings are generalizable most post-secondary institutions due institutional accreditation requirements educators, concerning statistics literacy rates incoming undergraduate students, general objectives curricular pathways, remarkable consistency found courses.
